Keep Winter Cool
Sundance supports the Sustainable Slopes "Keep Winter Cool" campaign. As we enjoy record snowfall and cold temperatures
this winter, it might be hard to believe that global temperatures
are on the rise. But across the planet, scientists are reporting
alarming changes in the air, and warmer temperatures might make
more than just skiers an endangered species.
What’s the Problem?
The problem is the growing amount of carbon dioxide we’re
emitting. Most carbon dioxide comes from burning fossil fuels,
which we use as a source of energy to generate electricity, power
our vehicles, and for lots of other uses. Carbon dioxide acts like
the glass in a greenhouse, trapping the sun’s warming rays
in the atmosphere. That’s why carbon dioxide is called a “greenhouse
gas,” and it’s why global temperatures have been rising
as carbon dioxide has built up.
As temperatures rise, the Earth’s climate changes, and those
changes can affect everything from rain in the tropics to snow
in our mountains. These changes can spell trouble for wildlife,
which is unable to adapt to the quickly changing conditions. And
the changing weather patterns also affect the winter weather skiers
depend upon to enjoy their sport. That’s why Sundance and
the rest of the ski industry are working together to address this
critical issue.
What Can We Do about It?
At Sundance, we recognize that, like other resorts, we use a lot
of energy to keep our operations going. So we’re committed
to cutting our energy use wherever we can. We’re pleased
to announce that we’ve committed to replacing 10 percent
of our conventional electricity with clean wind power. That’s
enough to power most of our lifts with the wind. But our energy-saving
initiatives don’t stop there. We also
have begun a resort-wide energy retrofit, provide free mass transit
to the resort for pass holders, offer carpooling discounts to guests,
and work closely with the North Fork Preservation Alliance to craft
environmental policies throughout the resort.
